Two-thirds of their neurons aren&rsquo;t in the brain at all — they&rsquo;re in the arms. Each arm can process information locally, react to stimuli, and coordinate with other arms without consulting the central brain. By all structural logic, an octopus shouldn&rsquo;t have unified consciousness. It should have nine separate consciousnesses, or none at all.</p>
